Spice Cake with Penuche Frosting

2 1/2 cups sifted cake flour

1 cup sugar

1 teas. baking powder

¾ teas. baking soda

1 teas. salt

½ teas. cloves

¾ teas. cinnamon

½ teas. allspice

½ teas. nutmeg

¾ cup brown sugar, packed in cup

¾ cup Crisco

1 cup buttermilk

3 eggs

 

Icing:

2 2/3 cup brown sugar

2/3 cup milk

2/3 cup Crisco

1/3 teas. salt

 

Cake:  Beat brown sugar and Crisco.  Add buttermilk alternately with dry ingredients.  Beat for 2 minutes.  Add eggs.  Beat two more minutes.  Pour into two 9 inch round pans and bake 35 minutes at 350 degrees.

Icing:  Mix all ingredients and cook over low heat.  Bring to a full boil, stirring constantly.  Boil exactly one minute.  Remove from heat and beat until lukewarm and of proper consistency for spreading.
