Mom’s Brownies

2/3 cup unsifted flour

¼ teas. salt

½ teas. baking powder

1/3 cup butter (she used Crisco)

2 squares unsweetened chocolate

2 eggs

1 cup sugar

1 teas. vanilla

½ cup chopped nuts

 

Melt Crisco and chocolate over low heat.  Beat eggs, adding sugar gradually.  Add chocolate mixture and vanilla.  Add flour, baking powder and salt.  Mix well until chocolate is evenly distributed through batter.  Stir in nuts.  Pour into greased 8x8 pan.  Bake about 20 minutes at 350 degrees—toothpick should come out sticky.  When cool, ice.  I think she always doubled the recipe, then used the icing recipe on the Hershey’s cocoa box.
